George G. Blaisdell founded Zippo in 1932 and the company produced its first lighter early the following year. As testimony to Blaisdell's superior product, the original patent for the windproof lighter was granted in March of 1936 and, with the exception of minor improvements, the lighter is essentially the same today.

During WWII the Bradford, Pennsylvania company ceased selling their products commercially and supplied the US military with lighters. The reliable Zippos had earned the servicemen's loyalty during the war, thus ensuring the company's success and everlasting popularity; over the decades Zippos have proven to be highly collectible. Still family-owned, Zippo has sold more than 400 million lighters and for over 75 years has stood by their pledge and lifetime guarantee: "It works, or we fix it for free."
